Getting something in the mail from someone other than a bill or something I bought for myself online is something that happens so infrequently. I have only a small handful of times when I sent anyone anything in the mail. It’s just a tad before my time.
I feel its echo’s though. I saw the Christmas and birthday cards as a social norm disappear. For a short time people sent e-cards, then gifs then nothing at all.
This seems like a relatively low cost, low effort to strengthen the social bonds in my existing relationships in a big way. First getting a thing in the mail is exciting and feels special. The pressure on a immediate response is removed via the innate speed of the conversational medium. They don’t call it snail mail for nothing!
So what do I need to have and know to start sending letters by mail? I only ahve advice here for US residents so if you live elsewhere sorry I can’t help you but good luck! You need something to mail, stamps, and (possibly) a scale. If you are sending postcards it couldn’t be simpler! Postcards come in standard sizes so you just fill out the adress section, write your fun message, apply teh needed postage, and pop it into an outgoing mail bin.
Currently a postcard mails for $0.56 postage. Compare that to a standard (up to 1oz) letter needing $0.73 or one Forever stamp Postage. With mailing letters I prefer to have a mail scale so that I can make certain I am applying the correct amount of postage. The Forever stamps are worth a variable amount being the equivalent to one standard size letter even if postage is hiked in price.
Sending postcards has so much to love. The stamps are themselves collectible pieces of art. Choosing a stamp that fits the person being sent the card or that will remind them of you is a time honored tradition. The postcards themselves can be of art or local landmarks. The collected cards building a historical record of your friendship.
